Saussurea lappa


Latin Name : Saussurea lappa
English Name : Costus
Sanskrit Name : Kushtha
Nepali Name : Kutha

Description:
An erect robust perennial herb. 6 to 7 feet in height. Compound leaf. Leaflets are 6 to 12 inch in length. Inflorescence is conical shape measuring one to one and half in diameter. Flowers are dark blue or black color. Fruits are flat, tapering and 3 mm in length. Flowering and fruiting time is August-September.

Parts used:
The dried roots of which constitute the drug.

Phytochemical properties:
The roots contain resinoids, saussurine, essential oil, alkaloid, inulin, a fixed oil and other minor constituents like tannins and sugars.

Medicinal properties:
The essential oil of the roots has strong antiseptic, disinfectant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also carminative, laxative, digestive and galactogogue. An alcoholic extract of the herb has been found very useful in the treatment of bronchial asthma and other respiratory disorders. It is also used as rejuvenating and aphrodisiac agent.

Dosage: ¼ to 1 gm.

Kustadi churna, kustadi kwath.
