Description:
Nutmeg is a tropical evergreen and fragrant tree. It grows to about 30-40 feet. Leaves are about 3 inch long, oval-rectangular or tapering, acute and slightly yellowish. Flowers unisexual, aromatic and yellowish. It produces fruit fifteen to twenty years after planting. The brown, wrinkled, oval fruit contains a kernel which is covered by a bright red membrane. The membrane provides the spice mace, and the kernel the spice nutmeg.

Phytochemical properties:
It contains 6-16% volatile oil, fix oil 38-40%, protein 7.5%, starch 14.6-24.2%, minerals 1.7%, pectin and amylodextin. The volatile oil contains myristicin, myristic acid etc.

Medicinal properties:
It is Aphrodisiac, carminative, expectorant, vermifuge, Aromatic, hallucinogenic, stimulant, deobstruent, sialagogue, emmenagogue and nervine.
Nutmeg relieves chronic nervous problems as well as heart problems; it aids in rheumatism, digestion, inflammations of the bladder & urinary tract and relieves nausea. Large doses can be poisonous and causes miscarriage for pregnant women

Dosage:
Powder: ½-1 gm
Oil: 1-3 drops.

Ayurvedic preparation:
Jatifaladi wati, Jtifaladi churna.
