Description:
It is shrub having 6 to 18 feet in height. It has somewhat rectangular, 1 to 3 inch long leaves; 2 to 3 inch long inflorescence having white flowers. The fruit are oval in shape, bluish in color.

Distribution:
mostly in 6 to 10 thousands feet height.

Root, stem, fruits.
Phytochemical properties:
Berberine, berberine chloride and palmative chloride are its principal constituents.
Medicinal properties:
The roots possess antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities. The drug is used as a cholagogue, stomachic, laxative, diaphoretic, antipyretic and antiseptic. It is administered externally for painful eye afflictions and hemorrhoids. The root bark is useful in amenorrhoea.
It has an essential active ingredient, Berberine, which possesses anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It is used in the treatment of leucorrhoea. It is also used in vaginal enema.
Dosage:
Decoction: 5 -10 ml
Rasanjan: 1-3 gm
Fruit: 5 -10 gm
