Paris polyphylla

Botanical Name: Paris polyphylla Sm.
Family: Liliaceae
Nepali Name: Satuwa
English Name: Love apple
Habitat and distribution: Shady and moist places, forests; 1800-3300m, CE Nepal.

Diagnostic characters: Erect herb to 60cm tall with creeping rootstock. Leaves in a whorl of 4-9, petioled, oblong or lanceolate, acuminate. Flowers greenish,
solitary, terminal, 4-6 ovate –lanceolate perianth segments.Flowering and fruiting
Chemical Constitiuent: steroid glycosides in dried rizome.

Parts used: Root
Medicinal Property: The roots are analgesic, antiphlogistic, antipyretic, antispasmodic, antitussive, depurative, febrifuge and narcotic. They posses anthelmintic properties. A decoction of the roots is used in the treatment of poisonous snake bites, boils and ulcers, diphtheria and epidemic Japanese B encephalitis. A paste of the roots is used as a poultice to treat cuts and wounds. The juice of the roots has been used as an anthelmintic. The roots have shown antibacterial action against Bacillus dysenteriae, B. typhi, B. paratyphi, E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, haemolytic streptococci, Meningococci etc. The whole plant is febrifuge.
