Description:
It is an erect, viscidly hairy, fetid annual or biennial
shrub of 5 feet high. Leaves are yellowish green in color.
Fruits are half inch in diameter. Many, short, oval or kidney
shaped and black seed are found.
Distribution: It is mainly
found between 5 to 12 thousands feet.
Part Used: Seeds, leaves and
flowers.
Phytochemical properties:
Hyoscyamine and hyoscine are found in leaves. Atropine is
found in root. It contains volatile base, a bitter glycoside
hyoscypicrin, choline, mucilage and albumin. It is rich
in potassium salts.
Medicinal properties:
It is widely used in Gastritis, intestinal cramps, diarhhoea,
neuralgia, cough, hysteria, skin inflammation, bladder pain,
gallstone and boils. It is also used in night emission (Night
fall), fast emission and dysmenorrea. Niger seed has anodyne,
narcotic and mydriatic properties, employed as a sedative
in nervous infections. Leaves are used in external pain.
In veterinary practice used as urnary sedative.
Dosage:
Powder: 0.25-1 gm
Note: heavy doses may act as poison.
Ayurvedic preparation:
Parashiyadi churna.
