Description:
It is a perennial herb, 6 foot long. Root hairy, grayish
and long. Leaves are oval in shape. Flowers rosy. 2-3 kidney
shaped seeds are squeeze in 1 inch long fruit.
Distribution: found in sub
tropical and warm temperate refion.

Phytochemical properties:
The main component is glycyrrnizin. It is more sweet then
suger. Its yellowish color is due to a glycoside isoliquiritin
which changes into liquiritin. The plant also contains phytoestrogens
in the form of isoflavones such as formononetin; glabrone,
neoliquiritin and hispaglabridin A & B.
Medicinal properties:
It is Tonic, Diuretic, Demulcent, Expectorant, Emenagogue
and Laxative. Used for allaying coughs and catarrhal infections.
Useful in irritable conditions of mucous memberane of Urinary
organs. Useful in sore throat, cough, anorexia and persistent
low fever. It modulates the immune system and has shown
remarkable immuno-stimulant properties. It has an antioxidant
activity. It is a mild anti-inflammatory for arthritis and
rheumatism and is used to treat gastric, duodenal and esophageal
ulceration or inflammation, heartburn and mouth ulcers.
Useful in flavouring of tobacco, confectionary, beverages,
jams and marmalades.
Dosage: 3-5 gm
