Despite the delay in advertising the four-day Arogya health fair, which concluded here today, the event drew over three lakh visitors equalling the level of response received in Amritsar last year, claimed the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

Even though the fair had a lukewarm response on the first day, the number of visitors increased over the weekend, giving a sigh of relief to the organisers who were keeping their fingers crossed as no publicity work had been taken even a couple of days before of its commencement at the SCD Government College for Boys ground on March 20.

“Over three lakh visitors came to the fair in four days, making it successful in the series of such events being held in the country for the last few years. The response was overwhelming and was equivalent to the one we saw in the last year’s mela at Amritsar,” said senior assistant director of FICCI Praveen Kumar Mittal.

The fair was the ninth such event in the country and the second in the state, which aimed at creating popularity and demand for the products and treatments available in the various alternative systems of medicine.

Organised by the Department of AYUSH (Ayurvedic, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homepathy), Punjab government and FICCI, the fair emerged as a hot spot for many residents who got their free check-ups done at the clinics set up at the fair.

As many as 15 thousand visitors visited the clinics as part of the free OPD services. Medicines were also given free to patients.

During the valedictory ceremony held today, officials of the Health department also said the next such health fair in the state may be held either at Mansa or Bathinda. The function was presided over by Chander Shekhar Talwar, commissioner, AYUSH, Punjab. Among others who were present on the occasion included Dr S P S Sohal, director, health services, Dr Rakesh Sharma, director, Ayurveda, Dr Inderjeet, joint director, Ayurveda, and Dr Narinder Dhand, district Ayurvedic and Unani officer along with FICCI officials.
