Emblica Officinalis


Scientific Name: Emblica Officinalis
English Name: Gooseberry
Nepali Name: Amala
Sanskrit Name: Amalaki

Description:
It is a tree 6-7.5 meters high. Fruits are found, fleshy and greenish yellow in color. Fully ripe fruits are pinkish yellow in color. There are six vertical lines on the outer coat of the fruits. Dried fruits are brownish black in color. It flowers in autumn and fruits ripen in late winter and spring.

Distribution:
It grows wild in forests and cultivated in plains of tropical and sub-tropical areas.

Phytochemical properties:
Its fruit contains the highest amount of vitamin C in natural form and cytokine-like substances identified as zeatin, z.riboside, z.nucleotide. Besides these, protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, nicotinic acid, tannin, Gallic acid, albumin, cellulose and glucose are found.

Medicainal properties:
It is Aperient, Carminative, Diuretic, laxative, refrigerant, Aphrodasiac, anabolic, antibacterial, expectorant, cardiotonic, antipyretic, antioxidative, antiviral, anti-emetic and has resistance building properties. It is the richest known source of vitamin 'C'. It is useful in anaemia, jaundice, dyspepcia, haemorrhage disorders, piles, constipation, atherosclerosis, leucorrhoea, diabetes, asthama and bronchitis. It cures insomnia and is healthy for hair.

Dosage:
Juice: 10-20 ml
Powder: 3-6 gm
Decoction: 30 ml

Ayurvedic preparation:
Chyawanprash, Brahma Rasayana, Datri lauha etc.
