Scope of Ayurveda

-Dr. Rabindra Pandey

Due to geographical and climatic favorable condition, Nepal is rich in medicinal and aromatic plants. By the combination of Himalaya, sub-tropical and tropical region, here are 1463 identified medicinal plants. Similarly Nepal is one of the richest kingdoms in minerals and animal products. Very rare Minerals and animal products like Kasturi are found in Nepal that is why Tourism, water resources and medicinal plants are tripod of Nepalese economy.

In the context of Nepal, more than 85% of people are taking Ayurveda Products knowingly or unknowingly. Many traditional healers are practicing in every village of Nepal. More than 95% people believe traditional therapy. Herbs, minerals and Animal products are easily available, affordable and out of side effects. Due to adverse effects of other therapies, educated people are also turning back to the Ayurveda.

Nepal is land-locked and developing country so that Nepalese people can not afford high cost for treatment. So medicines made from locally available medicinal plants may be more preferable.
In western countries, many miracle results are coming by the research of herbs. It is right time for identification, cultivation, preservation of Nepalese indigenous medicinal plants and registration in Intellectual Property Right (IPR).

The scope of Ayurveda in government sector is also increasing. In 75 districts BAMS doctors are servicing. Ayurveda Hospitals are being equipped with all the facilities. There is not any discrimination on Ayurveda Manpower in regard to all facilities and grade than the manpower of other therapies. Government is planning to run MD and PHD in Ayurveda. Similarly for the research, modernization and development of Ayurveda, recently between the government of China and Nepal had an agreement to establish National Ayurveda research and training center in Kathmandu and Nepal side is doing homework to establish Herbal garden, hospital and research center in Terai region may be by the government of India.

Ayurveda is a virgin field of research. One who wants to research has unlimited opportunities in Ayurveda.
